When the Pursuit of Health Becomes Stressful
Kelsey describes how changing her nutrition affected her mental clarity and helped provide a biological foundation for recovery. She also emphasizes that no dietary approach is automatically healing simply because it appears “healthy.”
The intention behind a behavior matters. A particular diet or exercise routine may feel nourishing and supportive at one point, then become rigid or fear-driven at another. According to Kelsey, this is where nervous system awareness becomes especially important.
As she explains:
“A stressed body cannot heal.”
When the body perceives danger, even an ordinary email or a wellness rule can trigger a stress response. Constantly worrying about eating the wrong thing, exercising incorrectly, or failing at recovery can make it harder to hear what the body genuinely needs.
Ask What Your Symptoms Are Saying
One question Kelsey frequently asks is:
If your symptoms could talk to you, what would they say?
The answer may not be immediately obvious. Your body might be asking for more nourishment, rest, support, play, connection, boundaries, or space away from a screen.
You don’t need to solve everything at once. The first step may be writing down what you feel, speaking with someone safe, listening to music, or giving yourself a few quiet minutes without another task to complete.
Recovery Should Bring You Back to Life
Music and creativity were central to Kelsey’s recovery. During the most difficult periods of her eating disorder, she lost the desire to sing and could barely listen to music. As her physical and mental health improved, her creative voice gradually returned.
Musical theater gave her structure, community, movement, purpose, and a place to express herself. Today, she uses her desire to create as one indication of how she is doing mentally and physically.
This offers a valuable reminder: recovery isn’t only about reducing symptoms. It is also about strengthening the parts of you that the disorder pushed aside.
What fuels your fire? What helps you feel present, expressive, connected, or curious? Those parts of your life deserve nourishment, too.
